Special Enrollment Periods when you receive no subsidy
A qualifying life event can open Marketplace enrollment even for a full-price shopper. The event, documentation and timing still matter.
When subsidies are unlikely, compare COBRA’s continuity with a new ACA plan using premiums, deductible progress and provider access.
COBRA generally lets eligible people continue the same employer coverage for a limited period, though the premium may rise because the employer may no longer contribute. Keeping the plan can preserve current doctors and the progress already made toward its deductible.
A Marketplace plan may have a lower full premium or different benefits, but you start with its own deductible, network and formulary. Compare actual amounts and care needs for the remaining months of the year.
Losing job-based coverage can open a Marketplace Special Enrollment Period. The Department of Labor says you generally must select a Marketplace plan within 60 days of that loss. Check exact dates and effective dates before allowing a gap.
Choosing COBRA does not prevent a Marketplace comparison, but ending COBRA early without another qualifying event may leave you waiting for Open Enrollment. Do not rely on a later switch that is not available.
Use COBRA’s actual premium, remaining deductible progress and expected care. Compare with the Marketplace plan’s full premium if no credit applies, plus its deductible, networks, drugs and out-of-pocket limit.
Confirm the effective date and first premium before ending either route. If the decision is time-sensitive, ask the plan administrators for written deadlines.
No. Compare the choices within the applicable enrollment window.
Not generally. Ending COBRA early can leave you waiting for the next Open Enrollment unless another event qualifies.

Official eligibility notices and plan documents control. Prestige is an independent insurance agency, not the Marketplace or insurer.

A zero subsidy does not change the Marketplace enrollment window. Prepare income, providers and plan comparisons before the deadline.
Do not let a full-price plan auto-renew without checking next year’s premium, network, drugs and income estimate.
