Special Enrollment Periods when you receive no subsidy

A qualifying life event can open Marketplace enrollment even for a full-price shopper. The event, documentation and timing still matter.

Savings and enrollment are different tests

A Special Enrollment Period may be available after a qualifying event such as loss of other coverage, a move, marriage or a new child. The Marketplace decides whether the event qualifies and which household members may enroll. A premium tax credit is a separate determination.

A shopper with zero savings may still use a qualifying Special Enrollment Period. Conversely, willingness to pay full price is not itself a qualifying event.

Check the event’s own deadline

Different events can have different date and documentation rules. Start the Marketplace application promptly, enter the event accurately and provide requested proof. Do not wait until the old plan has ended to investigate your options.

Compare the full premium and plan benefits for the exact start date available. Some private coverage may be sold on a different schedule, but its underwriting and protections can differ.

Avoid a coverage gap

Confirm when the old plan ends and when the new Marketplace plan begins. Pay the first premium by the insurer’s deadline. If you are deciding between COBRA and Marketplace coverage, understand how ending COBRA early affects later enrollment rights.

Keep all confirmation notices. A submitted application is not proof of active insurance.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get an SEP without a tax credit?

Yes, if the Marketplace finds that your life event qualifies.

Does a higher salary count as a qualifying event?

Income changes can affect savings, but a higher salary alone does not automatically create a new enrollment window.
