Open Enrollment when you expect to pay full price

A zero subsidy does not change the Marketplace enrollment window. Prepare income, providers and plan comparisons before the deadline.

The timing still applies

HealthCare.gov lists Open Enrollment for the coming year from November 1 through January 15 in states it serves. A selection by December 15 can start January 1 after the first premium is paid; later selections through January 15 generally start February 1. Confirm the rules for your state Marketplace.

Paying the entire premium does not open year-round Marketplace enrollment. Outside the window, a qualifying Special Enrollment Period is generally needed.

Prepare a real comparison

Gather expected coverage-year household income, ZIP code, household members, current plan, clinicians and prescriptions. The Marketplace application gives the actual savings result, even if you expect zero. Use the full premium in your comparison if no credit applies.

Compare annual premium, deductible, likely care costs, in-network out-of-pocket limit and provider fit. Previewing a plan is not the same as submitting an application.

Finish the enrollment

After selecting a plan, follow the instructions for the first premium. Confirm that the insurer received payment and the effective date is correct. Keep existing coverage until the new plan is active.

If you miss the window, check official Special Enrollment Period rules rather than assuming a private plan has equivalent benefits.
