Renewing a Marketplace plan without a subsidy

Do not let a full-price plan auto-renew without checking next year’s premium, network, drugs and income estimate.

Read the renewal notice as a new quote

A carrier can change the monthly premium, cost sharing, service area or plan availability for the next year. The Marketplace may also place you in a replacement plan if the old one ends. A familiar carrier name does not prove the contract is unchanged.

Review the full upcoming-year premium and re-enter expected income and household details. A prior zero-credit result may change; so can the Marketplace’s plan choices.

Recheck the parts that affect care

Verify your doctors, hospitals and pharmacy network on the new-year plan. Compare drug formularies and authorization rules for medications you use. Read the Summary of Benefits and Coverage for deductible and out-of-pocket changes.

Compare at least one other available plan on total yearly cost. The lowest premium is not necessarily best if likely care is expensive.

Choose before the relevant deadline

HealthCare.gov lists Open Enrollment from November 1 through January 15, with earlier selection needed for January 1 coverage. State-run Marketplaces can have different details. Confirm current dates and pay the first premium when required.

If you switch plans, verify the new effective date and the end of the old coverage. Do not assume an online selection alone activates the replacement.
