Child-only Marketplace coverage for a higher-income household

A child’s coverage can be shopped separately, but the tax household’s income and any employer offer still matter for savings.

Separate who needs coverage from who is counted

A parent can include a child who needs coverage on a Marketplace application while other household members keep another plan. The application still asks for the tax household’s information and expected income. A parent’s higher earnings may mean the child’s plan is full price.

A job-based offer for dependents can affect whether a premium tax credit is available. The official Marketplace determination is the reliable answer; do not assume a child has a separate low-income calculation.

Check pediatric and family care

Compare the exact child-only plan’s pediatricians, specialists, children’s hospital and prescriptions. A low adult premium shown in a general search does not establish the child’s actual rate or network.

Read the Summary of Benefits and Coverage for pediatric benefits, urgent care, emergency care and the individual out-of-pocket limit. Compare a child-only policy with adding the child to the employer plan using the full family budget.

Confirm dates and coordination

Enrollment is ordinarily during Open Enrollment or a qualifying Special Enrollment Period. If the child is leaving another plan, verify when that coverage ends and when the new policy becomes effective.

Do not end the existing coverage until the new enrollment and first premium are confirmed.

Frequently asked questions

Can my child use a Marketplace plan if I have employer insurance?

Possibly. Eligibility, timing and financial assistance depend on the household and the employer offer.

Is my child’s subsidy based only on the child’s income?

Usually not. Marketplace savings use the relevant tax household’s income.
