Check the hospital network before buying a full-price plan

A hospital name in a directory is only the first check. Confirm facilities, specialists and the exact plan before paying a full premium.

Name the exact facility

A hospital system may include several campuses and outpatient centers. Search the exact plan’s directory for the site you would use. Confirm with the hospital and carrier that the facility participates for the upcoming coverage year.

The hospital’s status does not establish that a surgeon, radiologist, anesthesiologist or specialist is in network. For planned care, verify the professional as well as the facility.

Understand the cost rules

Review inpatient and outpatient cost sharing, prior authorization, deductible and the in-network out-of-pocket limit. Emergency coverage follows different rules from planned surgery. Do not assume a PPO label removes all out-of-network exposure.

Compare the same likely-care scenario across plans. A low full-price premium can be poor value if your preferred hospital is outside the network.

Get current confirmation

Provider directories and contracts can change. Keep notes on the date, plan name and representative when you check. Reconfirm before a scheduled admission or procedure.

If no candidate includes the facility you need, discuss other available coverage rather than relying on an oral promise that a network exception will be granted.

Frequently asked questions

Does an in-network hospital mean all its doctors are in network?

No. Check clinicians and the facility separately for the exact plan.

Will emergency care use the same rules as planned surgery?

Not necessarily. Read the plan terms and current federal and state protections for your situation.
