Keep your doctors when paying full price for coverage

A full-price premium is wasted if the network misses your clinicians. Verify the exact plan, practice, hospital and referral rules.

Search the exact plan, not the insurer

Large carriers sell plans with different provider networks. Search the directory attached to the precise plan and year you are considering. Check each clinician by name, location and specialty; a hospital’s participation does not guarantee every doctor there participates.

HealthCare.gov lets shoppers search providers and facilities in plan comparison. Treat those results as a starting point, then ask the practice whether it accepts the exact product and network.

Check the care you actually use

If you have a surgeon, therapist, specialist or recurring diagnostic facility, confirm them individually. Read referral, prior-authorization and out-of-network rules. A PPO label may allow out-of-network claims yet leave a large balance after the plan pays its allowed amount.

Include prescriptions in the same review. The office visit and drug may have different cost-sharing rules even when the doctor is in network.

Value access alongside price

Compare the full annual premium and care costs only after removing plans that do not meet your essential provider needs. A lower premium may not compensate for replacing a care team or paying noncovered out-of-network bills.

Directories can change. Reconfirm participation with both provider and carrier before enrolling and again before major scheduled care.

If the carrier takes my doctor, does every plan from it?
