Can you buy a Marketplace plan without a tax credit?

Yes. Learn how full-price Marketplace enrollment works, what the application checks, and why the plan remains ACA coverage without a discount.

The application can return zero savings

You can apply through the official Marketplace or an approved enrollment partner even when you expect to pay full price. The eligibility result separates your ability to enroll from your eligibility for a premium tax credit. Do not skip the application merely because a preliminary estimate shows zero.

The Marketplace considers the coverage year’s expected household income, household size and access to other coverage. An agent cannot assign a tax credit by labeling you a high earner or change the official result.

What you still get at full price

The plan is still an ACA Marketplace plan. Its coverage rules for pre-existing conditions and essential health benefits do not disappear when the credit is zero. The network, drug list, cost sharing and carrier still differ by plan.

Compare the full monthly premium with the plan’s estimated yearly costs. A high-premium plan may be useful for frequent care, while a lower-premium plan may better fit a low-use year; neither choice follows from income alone.

When to enroll

For HealthCare.gov states, Open Enrollment is the ordinary enrollment period. Outside it, a qualifying event may create a Special Enrollment Period. A person paying full price follows the same timing rules.

After choosing a plan, follow the Marketplace’s instructions and pay the first premium to the insurer by the due date. Do not treat an application or plan selection as proof that coverage has begun.
