Spouse’s employer plan or full-price Marketplace?

The employee and family affordability tests can differ. Compare the offered job plan with Marketplace coverage using actual household premiums.

Check the offer before assuming no savings

An affordable job-based offer meeting minimum value can block a premium tax credit. For a spouse or dependents, affordability is tested using the family offer rather than only the worker’s self-only premium. A household can therefore have different assistance results for different members.

Ask the employer for the lowest-cost qualifying employee and family premiums and plan documents. Enter the offer accurately on the Marketplace application; do not infer eligibility from a coworker’s result.

Compare actual family costs

Many employers contribute more toward employee coverage than dependent coverage. Calculate the household’s monthly share for the job plan, then the Marketplace premium after any official credit—or at full price if none applies.

Check doctors, hospitals, prescriptions, deductibles and family out-of-pocket exposure on both sides. Split coverage may be worth exploring when family premiums are high, but it can create separate deductibles and networks.

Watch enrollment opportunities

A decision to decline or leave job coverage does not always create a Marketplace Special Enrollment Period. Confirm timing before ending any active plan. Employer and Marketplace open enrollment calendars may differ.

Keep the current coverage until the replacement and effective date are confirmed in writing.

Frequently asked questions

Does an affordable employee-only offer block the spouse’s tax credit?

Not necessarily. The family affordability test can produce a different result for spouse and dependents.

Can I buy a Marketplace plan even if my spouse has job coverage?

Often yes when enrollment rules are met, but savings depend on the offer and household facts.
