Variable income and the Marketplace subsidy cliff

A changing income estimate can move a household into or out of tax-credit eligibility. Learn how to keep a full-price comparison honest.

Project the coverage year, not a single month

Marketplace savings are based on expected annual household income for the year of coverage. A commission, seasonal contract or business sale can make one month unrepresentative. Build a documented estimate from income already earned plus realistic work and expenses for the rest of the year.

For 2026, the IRS says the general tax-credit eligibility range ends at 400% of the applicable federal poverty line. A household near that point should not treat an estimate as a promised discount.

Understand advance-credit risk

Taking advance premium tax credits reduces monthly bills before final annual income is known. The final credit is reconciled on the tax return. The IRS says excess advance credit repayment caps do not apply after 2025.

You may use all, some or none of an eligible credit in advance. That is a cash-flow choice, not a change to final eligibility. Get tax advice if a large late-year payment could move your income materially.

Keep two price views

Compare plans at the full premium and at any current Marketplace estimate so the choice still makes sense if income changes. Check benefits, networks and total costs in both cases; a zero credit does not make a plan unusable.

Update the Marketplace application when your expected annual income changes. Save the eligibility notices and premium records for tax-time reconciliation.
